The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a global search for effective methods of prevention and treatment for both acute illness and long-haul symptoms. As variants continue to emerge and reports of persistent spike-related issues rise, there is an urgent need for alternative approaches to combat both acute illness and long-COVID.

While we've previously discussed the therapeutic benefits of Nattokinase and other natural compounds in TWC’s Spike Support Formula, today we highlight another promising natural solution: common dandelion root extract. For more insights on natural health approaches, check out our full guide in Savor the World Global Bites.

How Spike Infects Our Cells

The SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for COVID-19, enters human cells using the spike protein. This protein binds to a human receptor called ACE2, located on the surface of cells. This binding is a key step in viral infection. Compounds that can block this interaction could serve as potential therapeutics.

Dandelion Root Impairs Spike’s Binding Ability

A 2021 study examined whether dandelion root extract could prevent the virus's spike protein from binding to ACE2 receptors in kidney and lung cells. Researchers tested the extract on several SARS-CoV-2 variants, including those with higher infectivity due to increased spike-ACE2 affinity. The findings were promising: dandelion root extract efficiently inhibited spike protein binding without interfering with normal ACE2 function.

Interestingly, the study also noted that dandelion root temporarily reduced ACE2 protein levels in lung cells, which may provide an added layer of protection against viral infection.

A 2022 follow-up study exposed the Omicron variant to dandelion root extract for 30 minutes and found it “was sufficient to block infection by 80%.” These results indicate that dandelion root may also help mitigate lingering spike protein effects, which contribute to long-COVID symptoms.

Bottom Line

Dandelion root extract shows promise as a natural treatment for COVID-19 and its emerging variants. While further research is needed, current findings suggest it is a safe, accessible, and affordable option for both prevention and long-haul symptom support.
